Time to get paid, Blow up like the World Trade Applique on fabric 2008
Original master drawing
Rough layout with squares cut and laid out in strips trying to get the feel for the overall size and balance.
Sun rays being stained for heat treatment. Gotta love that Martha Stewart towel.
Layout to confirm everything still fits after shrinkage from treating. Canvas + water + heat = bollocks
Just about to pin and sew. Trying to balance everything according to grid created by quilting. Notice that razor in this corner? I'll cut you fool!
So now the unicorn is done. The pieces are laid out in such a way that the seams are covered by the other elements as you go from background to foreground. This is tricky as some elements such as the unicorn sit on multiple planes. So as the bulk of his body sits in the back, his tail cascades towards the foreground. There's a subtle shifting on the flat plane that allows the illusion to work.
The flower bed is now complete. Sewing this was a complete pain in the rump roast and as i hurled four letter words at the sky all i could do was dream of the day I have an army of assistants with tiny nimble fingers to take care of this rubbish for me.
I love it when ya call me big poppa.
The hard work is now over. Trimming is next. After that, I cut the back and border pieces, cop some spanish food, and put this bad boy to rest( sorry Biggie but the pun is just to amazing) |
